Mall security guard racially abused by prolific shoplifter
A Blackburn Mall security guard was racially abused when he ordered a known shoplifter out of the shopping precinct. Blackburn magistrates heard Mark Craig was already banned from the centre because of his previous behaviour. Craig, 36, of Dundee Drive, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated threatening behaviour.
He was fined GBP100 and ordered to pay GBP30 compensation and GBP34 victim surcharge. Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Arshad Mahmood was working in the Mall at 11.30 am when he saw Craig who he knew was banned because of previous shoplifting offences. He was asked to leave but initially refused.
When he eventually left by the County Court exit Craig turned round and said; “Get away from me you black bxxxxxd” He was detained until the police arrived. Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client conceded it had been terrible language to use and must have been very hurtful.
“It was out of frustration,” said Mr Taylor. “He went into the Mall to use the facilities and he was quickly ushered away.”
